Summer events 2012

Although the main season runs from opening night in September to the AGM in June, there is plenty of chess activity taking place over the summer.

Essex Rapidplay knockout

This is a 30/30 event run by the Essex Chess Association, with two games played by each pair of players, for teams of 6.  In the 2012 event the first team beat Southend 10 – 2 at home in the first round, and will be away to  Writtle in the semi-final.  The second team was eliminated from the main competition 6½ – 5½ by Thurrock and then lost 7-5 to Southend in the Plate semi-final.

Baum Trophy

This is a 30/30 event run by the North Circular League on a league basis, with two games played by each pair of players, for teams of a minimum of 4.  The club has entered two teams, and in the Wanstead 1 v Wanstead 2 clash that opened the campaign elected to play a 7 board match.

Essex Team Blitz

This is an annual event organised by the Essex Chess Association for teams of 4.  This year it took place at Ilford Chess Club on 24 June, sponsored by King & King, and the club entered two teams.  The event attracted a total of ten teams and was, as usual, won by Cavendish.  Wanstead A (Larry Marden, David Spearman, Terry Whitton and Ian Hunnable) finished 5th with 21½ points and Wanstead B (Mark Murrell, Paul Kellett, Sid Burns and Paul Haddock) finished 8th with 10½ points.

Sam Black Memorial Blitz

On 18 June the club hosted on behalf of the North Circular League the 13th Sam Black Memorial Blitz, a 5 round event with two games in each round.  This year the event was split into an Open (16 entrants including club members Larry Marden, Istvan Lengyel, Philip Staniland Mark Murrell) and a <U150 Challengers (9 entrants including club members Charlton Siddo, David Smith and Peter Nickals). Clear winner of the Open with 8½/10 was IM Thomas Rendle.

Friendly v Hastings & St Leonards

This match was successfully revived as an annual fixture in 2010.  The 2012 event took place on Sunday 2 September and resulted in a 10 – 5 Wanstead victory.  For a report click here.

Capes Trophy

This is an annual team blitz event organised by the North Circular League, in which the club normally enters one or (hopefully) more teams.  The 54th event will be taking place on 28 September 2012 in the Hall at Wanstead House.

Normal activities will resume on 11 September with the caterpillar simultaneous, with the Committee meeting taking place the previous week.
