David Spearman wins Lighting Championship

David Spearman won the Lightning Championship held on 4 October with the convincing score of 6½/7, with Alex Collyer and Ian Hunnable tied for second 1½ points behind.  Special mention should be made of Alex’s showing, as ranked 17th of the 24 entrance his performance was 52 points above his grade, and he took the scalps of Terry Whitton, Vladimir Parols, Ian Hunnable and Philip Staniland.

Buzzer chess returns. A 6 or 7 round Swiss Tournament of move on the buzzer chess at a rate of 10 seconds between buzzes.

Entry fee £1 in addition to the usual £3 board fee. All entry fees are returnable in prizes.

Wanstead Festival 2016

wanstead-festival-2016The Wanstead Festival was held on Sunday the 18th of September 2016 from 11.00 a.m. until 6.00 p.m. on Christchurch Green in Wanstead High Street.

The day got off to an auspicious start when I arrived with the President of Wanstead House Ron Filer who we share an open tent with only to find we did not appear on their list for a designated space, this actually proved to be a blessing in disguise as after discussions with one of the organisers we were able to choose a prime spot at the crossroads. Club Championship round 1 draw published

40 players have entered the 2016/17 Club Championship.  The draw has now been made and can be viewed here.  The higher graded players will be White on odd numbered boards as a result of a selection made by Ilford Secretary Tom Barton at the North Circular League match earlier in the week.

In the absence of a dispensation, games will be played at Wanstead House on Tuesday 27 September.

Wanstead House open morning

The Club had a presence at the annual open day at Wanstead House held on 10th September from 10.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. as part of the Wanstead Art’s Trail in the lead up to the Wanstead Festival on Sunday 18th September (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) on Christchurch Green on the High Street where the Club will also be taking on all comers from the local community.
