Club Championship 2012/13

The Club Championship is organised as a “Swiss” tournament running through the season, which for 2012/13 has been increased from 7 rounds to 9.  It is open to members 14 years of age and over, and younger players at the discretion of the Committee.

The time-table allows four rounds before Christmas and five rounds after.  Highest points score wins and in the event of a tie a play-off is held to decide the Champion.  The winner holds the title of Club Champion and the Championship trophy for one year, and receives an inscribed plaque for permanent retention.  The Champion has the right to take Board 1 for the 1st team(s) in Club matches in the following season.

Cash prizes are offered for following places; grading prize(s) according to entry will be announced by the Tournament Secretary as in due course.  All results are submitted for ECF grading.

All points scored in the Club Championship count towards the Roy Wagstaff Memorial Shield.

Follow this link to access the rules, which have been amended by the Committee for 2012/13  to provide an option for an incremental time control and to codify the play off arrangements.

The scheduled round of the 2012/13 event will be on 2 October 2012, 23 October 2012, 20 November 2012, 11 December 2012, 15 January 2013, 12 February 2013, 12 March 2013, 9 April 2013 and 7 May 2013.

2 Responses to Club Championship 2012/13

  1. John Keehner says:

I dont know about what other chess players think but I was disappointed in the way the tables & chairs were set out in round 2 of the championship. When everybody was sitting down there was no clear gangway to move freely about.
One of my enjoyments in chess is to wander around and look at other games. This I found impossible. (It wasn’t the same in round 1).
It may also be a fire risk

    • Mark Murrell (Tournament Secretary) says:

Members are more than welcome to arrive at 7pm and help to prepare the Club Room for a busy night’s chess and not just on Championship nights. Staying on afterwards to help clear away would also be appreciated. When there is a full house options as to layout are very limited. New ideas are of course welcome, but I suspect tried.

The layout in the main body of the room was no different for round 2 than round 1 with the only addition being a third small table by the far windows. I should know I put out the tables! The design allows three channels of access to the entrance area. The difference in perception was probably due to different bodies in different seats. The same principle is adopted for County Matches I am more concerned with ensuring that those members who have mobility restrictions are included within the playing room and have the space and access they need.

I was assisted in rounds 1 and 2 by the number of dispensations allowing Manor to be kept for analysis without disturbing other players, as has been the norm on Championship nights.

With only 1 requst for dispensation in round 3 and a few additional participants round 3 is looking like requiring Manor as well, so it should be a little more comfortable for everyone provided analysis is taken to the downstairs lounge and bar.

As controller I am deligted to see our Club Room full to its brim with games of chess and long may it continue.

      Mark Murrell
      Tournament Secretary,
