Opening night, 11 September 2012

Although Wanstead & Woodford is now an the all year round chess club, there continues to be the traditional opening night in September to mark the commencement of the main programme of activities through the winter.  The caterpillar simultaneous display was on this occasion preceded by presentations.  The club championship had been unresolved at the time of the Annual General Meeting as a result of the need for a three way play off to be completed: this was ultimately won by Ian Hunnable.  Philip Staniland presented the trophy to Ian, and handed out prizes to the runners up and the winners of the various grading prizes.

Philip also presented the North Circular League Division B trophy to John Keehner, under whose captaincy the club’s second team in this division had achieved an outstanding 100% record and will as a consequence be playing in Division A alongside the first team this season.

On then to the main event of the evening which got under way at 7.45 p.m. – a caterpillar simultaneous display given by the main trophy winners for the 2011/12 season – Ian Hunnable (Club Champion), David Spearman (Roy Wagstaff Shield) and Peter Nickals (David Wood Trophy) – against 26 members of the club.

The caterpillar started strongly, winning the first three games to finish, before Mark Murrell scored the first half point for the club.  It continued to look like one way traffic as the caterpillar built a convincing 9½ – 1½ lead before Sid Burns struck for the club with a queen sacrifice leading to mate in two.  Wins by Larry Marden and John Keehner in the next two games to finish restored some respectability for the club, but this turn in the tide proved to be temporary as the caterpillar lead was extended to 16½ – 7½ before a late rally saw Laurie Burtt and John Jestico win the last two games to finish.

Indeed, I anticipated that in this position White was winning material in view of the nasty threat against h7. It was therefore a shock on my next circuit to find it was all over and Sid had won! 33…Qxb4! Brilliant move, Sid! 34.Rxb4 Rc1+ 35.Bf1 Rg2+ 0-1
