Opening night, 6 September 2011

David Smith reports:

With more torrential rain threatened outside, it was hardly surprising that a number of our regular members chose to stay at home and watch England’s soccer stars struggle against the might of Wales. Those who did make it to Wanstead House for the Club’s traditional Opening Night “Caterpillar” Simultaneous were treated to an impressive display of controlled chess by our own team of stars, namely joint Club Champions Ian Hunnable and Terry Whitton, David Wood winner Philip Staniland and joint holder of the Roy Wagstaff Shield (with Ian H.) David Spearman.

The Club’s team of champions were faced with sixteen of their fellow Club members, ranging in strength from Larry Marden (ECF 180) to Philip Edwards (ECF 53). The increased difficulty of four people playing together without consultation was more than compensated by the speed at which the team completed its circuit of the room, so that on a number of occasions the next expert loomed into view within a few seconds of his predecessor’s move.

First to finish, after just 40 minutes play, was Charlton Siddo who achieved a creditable draw, but this result was swiftly followed by two wins for the Caterpillar as Jon Filar and Matt Kay were forced into submission. Other results followed at regular intervals, but at no time did the Caterpillar seem in any danger as they continued to demolish most of the opposition before them.

The final score of 12-4 in favour of the Caterpillar was a fair reflection of the skills displayed by the whole team in co-ordinating their efforts without the benefit of consultation. Creditable draws were achieved, inter alia, by Istvan Lengyel and Paul Kellett, two of our newest members recruited during the summer months.

Detailed results of this enjoyable and entertaining event were as follows:
