Wanstead 3½ – ½ Tunbridge Wells, 3 February 2008

A CONVINCING VICTORY

With the National Club Major team falling at the first hurdle, the Club’s hopes for the season rested with the Minor team, which had the benefit of a home draw in the first round.  There was little difference in the average grades of the two teams, but a significantly different patterm in the sides.  Whereas I had opted to play the relatively low graded (in my view undergraded) Andy Lu on board 4 in order to maximise our strength on boards 1 to 3, Tunbridge Wells opeted for a flatter line up in grading terms.  The Wanstead match strategy could not have worked out any better, as Andy held the draw with Black against an opponent graded 37 points higher, and the others all won.
