EAST ANGLIAN JAUNT

Saxmundham 1 Jan 2011

Train was a popular way of getting to Saxmundham

Wanstead’s quest for a hat trick of National Club Major title began at Saxmundham in Suffolk, which was the latest “interesting” venue to be visited in this competition.  Missing their two strongest players, Saxmundham were no match for their visitors, and the outcome was never in doubt from the time that Philip Staniland mated his opponent with Black on move 6.  One has to feel a little sorry for Saxmundham, who would almost certainly have been better suited to the Intermediate competition, but for the fact that their strongest player was just over the average grade limit.   Having faced the defening champions in the first round of the main competition, Saxmundham would find themselves away to Wood Green in the first round of the Plate competition.  However, at least the Club would take half a point from that encounter.
