Summer events 2011

Although the main season runs from opening night in September to the AGM in June, there is plenty of chess activity taking place over the summer.

Essex Rapidplay knockout

This is a 30/30 event run by the Essex Chess Association, with two games played by each pair of players, for teams of 6.  In the 2011 event the Club achieved an excellent 9½ -2½ win away to Southend, and followed this up by winning away to Brentwood in the second round, but were shaded 6½ – 5½ by Writtle in the semi-final.

Full results for the competition can be found on the Essex website here.

Baum Trophy

This is a 30/30 event run by the North Circular League on a league basis, with two games played by each pair of players, for teams of a minimum of 4.  The club has entered two teams, and in the Wanstead 1 v Wanstead 2 clash that opened the campaign elected to play a 7 board match.

Fixtures and results are shown on the following page.

Essex Team Blitz

This is an annual event organised by the Essex Chess Association for teams of 4.  This year it took place at Ilford Chess Club on 26 June, sponsored by King & King, and the club entered two teams.  The event attracted a total of ten teams and was, as usual, won by Cavendish.  Wanstead A (David Spearman, Ian Hunnable, Terry Whitton and Ian Hunnable) finished 5th with 20½ points and Wanstead B (Mark Murrell, David Smith, Sid Burns and Fin O’Regan) finished 8th with 8 points.

A report, including full results and photographs, can be found on the Essex website here.

Sam Black Memorial Blitz

On 14 July the club hosted on behalf of the North Circular League the 12th Sam Black Memorial Blitz, a 6 round event with two games in each round.  The 26 entrants included club members Larry Marden, Mark Murrell, David Smith, Philip Staniland, Fin O’Regan and John Jestico: joint winners with 10/12 were GM Gawain Jones and Paul Gheorgiou.

The cross-table can be found on the North Circular League website here.

Friendly v Hastings & St Leonards

This match, which used to be an annual fixture, was successfully revived in 2010.  A 12 man team travelled down to Hastings on 14 August for the 2011 encounter, but were outscored 8 – 4 by their hosts.  For a report, click here.

Capes Trophy

This is an annual team blitz event organised by the North Circular League, in which the club normally enters one or (hopefully) more teams.  The 2011 event (which is the 52nd) took place on Friday 23 September at Enfield.  Three teams were entered, but none made it through the qualifying groups to play in the Capes Trophy proper, although the Monarchs team did win final group B.  Tables can be found here.
