White, John – Hunnable,Ian [C13]

Barking 1 v W&W 1, Essex League Div 1, 23.11.2003

[Ian Hunnable]

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Be7 5.Bxf6 Bxf6 6.e5 Be7 7.Qg4 O-O 8.O-O-O f5 9.Qh3 c5 10.dxc5 Bxc5 The books recommend here 10…Nc6, but Fritz is quite happy with my move.11.f4 Nc6 12.Bd3 Nb4 13.a3 If 13.g4 Qb6 14.Kb1 (14.Na4 Nxa2+ 15.Kb1 Qb4 16.Nxc5 Nc3+ 17.Kc1 Nxd1 -+) 14…Nxd3 15.Qxd3 Bd7 16.Nge2 -+ Or 13.Nge2 Bd7 14.a3 Nxd3+ 15.Qxd3 Qb6 16.Nd4 Rac8 -+ 13…Nxd3+ 14.Rxd3 14 Qxd3 is better.14…b5! Embarking on the attack without delay. If 15 Nxb5 Qb6 wins a piece due to the under-defended knight at g1, weakened by the capture on d3 with the rook.15.Nge2 If 15.b4 Be7 16.Nxb5 a5-+15…Bd7 15…b4 16.axb4 Bxb4 17.Qh5 Qa5 18.Rh3 Qa1+ 19.Nb1 h6 20.Rg3 Rb8 21.Qxh6 Rf7 22.Qh5 Bc5 23.b3-+16.g4 a5 17.Nd4 17…Bxd4! Giving back one ‘bishop for knight’ exchange is the best trade here: the nuisance of the knight arriving on d4 is snuffed out, the rook is drawn to a less active square (d4) and Black can progress the attack with gain of time.18.Rxd4 Qb6 19.Rhd1? This is not White’s best option. Either 19.Ne2 or retreat of the rook to d3 or d2 was indicated. 19…b4 Superficially, it seems White might have a sac on d5, but it is insufficient: 20 Nxd5 exd5 21 Rxd5 fxg4 followed by …Bf5. 20.axb4 axb4 21.Nb1 21 Nxd5 would now be met by 21…Ra1+ 22 Kd2 Qxd4+ etc. This awkward retreat is relatively best as 21 Ne2 is met by 21…Bb5! forcing 22 Kd2 Rfc8 etc.21…Qc5! I wanted to play 21…Ra1, but White can then afford 22 Qb3. Also, 21…Rfc8 (with 22 Qb3 Ba4 in mind) allows 22 gxf5. Further, 21…Rac8 would let go of the a-file and, after 22 Qb3, I would have neither …Ba4, nor …Ra1. Since the point to attack is c2, this queen move is the logical conclusion. 22.gxf5 Rxf5 23.b3? Cutting off the possibility of defence by Qb3. If 23.R1d2 Ra1 24.Qb3 Qa7 25.Rd1 Rf8 26.Rxb4 Ra8 27.Kd2 Qf2+ (or 27…Ba4 28.Qg3 (if 28.Qe3 Qxe3+ 29.Kxe3 Bxc2) 28…Qc5 29.Rb7 Qxc2+ 30.Ke3 Qe4+ 31.Kf2 Qg6 32.Qxg6 hxg6 33.Rc1 Be8 34.Rcc7) 28.Kc1 23…Ra1 24.Qd3 Rf8 Re-grouping the deflected rook to reach c8 as originally intended. 24…Be8 also came into consideration. White, in the meantime, cannot make a bolt for it with 25 Kd2 as 25…Ra2 26.Rc1 Rc8 is overwhelming. 25.Qd2 Rc8 25…Qa7 26.Qxb4 Qa2 26.Kb2? Perhaps the question mark is not fair here. If 26.Rxb4 Ra2, and if 26 Rg1 Ra2 27 Rg2 Rxc2+! 26…Qa5 0-1
